Craft Happens

June was CRRRAAAZZZYYYY... if you don't believe me go back to my June posts... July was full of camping and family reunions and August is well... time for school to start.  It is amazing, you can just tell when it is school time again.  The kids are suddenly so boooorrrrreeeeddd and can't seem to find anything to do but punch each other and ask when the neighbors will be home.
So, we have had to get creative around here.  Here are some of our latest projects.

Sidewalk paints, even our favorite neighbor pal got into the action!

The recipe I found for this said to combine corn starch, water and food coloring, but never gave an amount.  If I can remember correctly, we did 1 tbsp. of corn starch for each color, then 2 tbsp. water, and 5 drops of food coloring.  We had a ball just making the paints before they even made it to decorate the sidewalk.

Even the stinker thought this was great and was entertained for minutes!

Our finished masterpiece... and yes, it did wash off nicely!

Next up... SLIME!

This stuff was super fun to play with and has kept quite nicely in a ziplock bag.
Here is the recipe, which I got from Our Best Bites, who have an awesome step by step picture tutorial on this if you want it, just click on the link.

Homemade Slime aka GAK
1 teaspoon borax powder
1 1/2 C water, divided
4 oz (1/2 C) Elmer’s glue, clear or white
food coloring

Add borax powder to 1 cup of water and stir to dissolve. Set aside. Pour glue into a medium mixing bowl and add 1/2 C water. Add a few drops of food coloring until desired color is reached and then stir to mix glue solution until smooth. Pour the borax mixture into the glue mixture and watch the solids start to form. Stir for a few moments and then use your hands to gather the mass. The mixture will be very soft and wet. Keep kneading until it firms up and feels dry. Discard excess liquid in bowl. The more you knead and play with the slime the firmer it will become. Store in a ziplock bag or air tight container and the slime will keep indefinitely.

Our adorable Hooters!  Don't ask me for directions, we just kind of "winged" it, get it we "winged" it... oh I am so funny.

This craft actually took up the better part of a day!  A whole day!!!  We decided that the half wall on our stair landing would make a great ocean.  We each made as many sea creatures that we could think of and arranged them in this life-sized playform.  Oh such fun, until Charlotte ripped everything down...

Ian's colorful fish and sea turtle.  He is such an artist and spends large amounts of time always completing his crafts making them immaculate.  He also cuts very well.  I am so proud of all that he is accomplishing!

Tanner's pod of whales.  Tanner is so into wildlife and especially ocean life and loves to learn all that he can... he just soaks it all in like a "sponge"... oh there I go again, I am so "punny" today!

And Ashlyn's boy crabs with their "girlfriend" crabs with pink bows in their hair.  It was so fun to see each of my children's personalities coming through as we worked on this craft together!

This is our puffy finger painting activity.  This came about when we saw a picture of a puffy paint snowman, but decided we could not make snowmen in the summer time... so we added a little color and voila...

Our puffy paint masterpieces!

If you want to make your own puffy finger paints, add equal amounts shaving cream and elmer's glue, and a couple of drops of food coloring and then stir until frothy.
